REMATCH BETWEEN TOP TEAMS EARNS OAKVILLE VYTIS U14 GIRLS PROVINCIAL TITLE
BRAMPTON, ON – In the Ontario Cup’s Division 1 final for the U14 Girls’ provincial title the top two teams met once again for all the marbles.
Leading up to the Ontario Cup the Stoney Creek Storm had won the OBLX Championship to end the season of league play and earned the top seed.
“Coming into this game as defending champions we were trying to motivate ourselves but then two weeks ago we lost to Stoney Creek in the OBLX final and I think it was the best thing that could have happened to us,” said Oakville Vytis coach Alana Juzenas. “We came in as underdogs and the practices the past two weeks have been the best of the season.”
Oakville Vytis found themselves in early foul trouble and Stoney Creek Storm controlling offensive boards with an 8-3 lead after the first quarter. Good defense by both teams in the second frame kept the score close and Vytis didn't allow a single point in the quarter but they're unable to even the score, missing a shot at the buzzer and ending half down 8-6.
The Storm started the second half with a spectacular fast break dish from Kaitlynn Nichols to Ella Muraca for the basket but that’s when Vytis mounted their comeback. Oakville’s Iyana Knights answered with consecutive layups and strong play by Teah Stupar down low. A Katie Hartman and-1 made it 28-23 for Vytis who marched on to a 31-26 victory.
“It’s just been like a family for us – the coaches and my teammates we’ve all had such a huge connection and we love each other and have worked together for this long and it’s paid off,” said Vytis captain Jessica Dougall.
Coach Alana Juzenas added, “There have been five of them that have been together since the fourth grade and we’ve added pieces but the cohesiveness of them playing together so long has made them thrive. This isn’t one person’s team, this is Vytis and they’ve been happy for each other and that’s team basketball.”
The U14 Major Bantam Girls Ontario Cup Provincial Championships took place from April 7th to April 9th in Brampton and featured 80 teams in Divisions 1 through 11. Full results are available here.
