Ontario Basketball (OBA) announced changes to young player rules (YPR) and tournament draw formats for the 2013-14 basketball season and 2014 Ontario Cup Provincial Championships.

“Since its inception at the turn of the century, young player rules have been beneficial to the growth and development of athletes under the age of 12 but have seen mixed results with rule enforcement,” said Michael Cvitkovic, executive director, Ontario Basketball. “This is a significant milestone for the organization as we continue to make changes to our competition structure while incorporating long-term athlete development principles. I would like to thank our board, staff, OABO, Regional Stakeholders Network and Competition Review Committee for their collaboration on this important work.”

Highlights from the revised YPR include a partnership with the Ontario Association of Basketball Officials (OABO) to enforce zone infractions (no longer the responsibility of tournament convener) and variations to pressing at U10 Novice to U12 Major Atom. Also, systematic changes to equal participation and player shifting will provide ease for coaches and fully integrate Canadian Sport for Life (CS4L) philosophies at the Fundamentals stage.

In addition to revisions to YPR, Ontario Basketball has altered its tournament draws to become an exciting bracket format for all age categories. The U13 Bantam to U19 Junior age categories will expand to include 16 teams, with the winning Division 1 team still receiving an AAU season-ending tournament berth. All remaining divisions in each age category will continue to have eight (8) team draws.

The benefits of the tournament format changes are the opportunity for teams to be re-seeded after their first game (lessening the focus on initial ranking and seeding) and a guaranteed minimum of four (4) games for all teams at the 2014 Ontario Cup Provincial Championships.

Ontario Basketball will work closely with sanctioned tournament hosts and coaches to introduce these newly established rules during the 2013-14 basketball season and at 2014 Ontario Cup.
