ONTARIO PLAYERS SET TO MAKE IMPACT IN MARCH MADNESS

Ontario Basketball (OBA) is pleased to support the 17 male and six female athletes from Ontario participating in the NCAA Division I Basketball Championships in the United States. The men’s tournament begins on March 15 and will continue in a single elimination format until a winner is crowned on April 2, while women compete March 17 to April 3. Eligible teams were announced on Sunday (men’s) and Monday (women’s).

Ontario is represented in 20 competing teams in the 2012 edition of March Madness including 10 athletes that played in the elite Team Ontario program (Natalie Achonwa, Junior Cadougan, Melvin Ejim, Alex Johnson, Myck Kabongo, Vanessa Kabongo, Jahenns Manigat, Arnold Mayorga, Megan Lukan and Kevin Pangos).

Notable players include A10 Player of the Year, Andrew Nicholson (Mississauga) on St. Bonaventure; West Coast Conference Newcomer of the Year, Kevin Pangos (Holland Landing) on Gonzaga and Texas’ Myck Kabongo (Toronto), selected as a All-Big 12 Honourable Mention and a member of the Big 12 All-Rookie team.

“It is a very exciting time of year for basketball in our province,” said Michael T. Cvitkovic, executive director, Ontario Basketball.  “Coming off the Carleton Ravens amazing CIS basketball title run and with the Ontario Cup Provincial Championships only a few weeks away, now is a great opportunity to support another group of great Ontario athletes. These 23 individuals represent countless hours of dedication not only by the athletes themselves, but also the OBA clubs and coaches that played a part in their journey to March Madness.”
